Omega for eyes

The influence of the quantity and quality of consumed fat on the functionality of the organ of vision was the subject of the assessment of the scientists from the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.  Scientists compiled the data about the occurrence of the symptoms of the so-called “dry eye” – a morbid state consisting in the desquamation of epitheliums of the cornea and the conjunctiva – with the data about the eating habits of 37,000 American women. The data analysis demonstrated that in women consuming large amounts of fish products, which are a source of omega 3 fatty acids, the incidence of "dry eye" symptoms was even 68% lower than in the case of those women who consumed very little of such products. The same analysis provided evidence that too high consumption of omega 6 fatty acids increases the risk of the symptoms of the disease. If the proportion of omega 6 to omega 3 was higher than 15:1, the incidence of the "dry eye” complaint increased as much as by 250%.

In the opinion of the authors of the quoted assessment, the results obtained in this manner seem to be another argument for the existence of unquestionable health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids in diets.
